RJ Fontaine (she/they) is a self-taught, Slavic-American, queer outsider/folk artist born and raised on Dena’ina land. Their hand painted stories aim to magnify kaleidoscopes of spirit within a single water droplet, wound, prayer, or moment in time. Click here to view original paintings.

RJ’s latest painting “Better Together” is currently featured as a limited-edition sticker for Spenard 2nd Saturday Fall Quarter 2024. 100% of sticker proceeds benefit YWCA Alaska. ‘Better Together’ is a tribute to the Spenard community and our tenacious desire to help one another succeed.

In 2023, Arts Anchorage published an article about RJ’s life and overall creative journey with mental health.

In 2024, RJ completed The Alaska Writers Workshop, a 7-week residency offering a cohort of 3 Alaskan writers the space and time to further develop a full-length play that they are currently working on. Her full-length original dark comedy play, Death and Other Girly Things, will be available on New Play Exchange for professional and educational use starting in Winter 2025.

Prior to the 2020 pandemic shutdowns, RJ worked as an actor / writer in Los Angeles for a decade. Their writing and performance work has been educated and supported by the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, Antioch University Los Angeles, LARB Publishing Workshop at USC, the Los Angeles Review of Books, LoveTV, Loft Ensemble, The Groundlings, The Upright Citizen’s Brigade (UCB), and a bunch of underground comedy dives over the years.
